Background

Georgia Power serves 2.36 million customers in 155 of Georgia's 159 counties.

Investments
Georgia Power has invested more than $4 billion in transmission and distribution (power lines) since 1991. Between 1990 and 2015, Georgia Power will have invested $7 billion on environmental control technologies.

Customers First
Georgia Power's top priority is customer service. This means keeping reliability high and power rates low. Georgia Power ranks in the top quartile for customer satisfaction among peer utilities and has been cited on several occasions by J.D. Power and Associates.

Diversity

Georgia Power welcomes and values the differences among our employees, our customers and the communities we serve. Our success depends on it!

To us, diversity is much more than race and gender. It's each of us feeling welcomed and valued as individuals. It's about working in an environment where we can reach our potential and make our greatest contribution.

Economic Development

Through the years, Georgia Power has received numerous awards for contributions to the state's economic development. In 2011, the company's Community and Economic Development organization played a key role in helping 80 companies that had new locations or expansions, bringing more than 10,000 new jobs and $2.37 billion in new capital investment to Georgia. Georgia Power's Community and Economic Development organization was ranked as one of the best in the world for the 13th year in a row by Site Selection magazine.

Citizenship

Georgia Power is a Citizen Wherever We Serve and has been since that phrase was coined in 1927 by the company’s first president, Preston Arkwright. We are a part of a community that spans the Southeast. While that sounds like a pretty big neighborhood, each individual community we serve in Georgia offers us opportunities to make a difference in people's lives and businesses. And as part of Southern Company, our combined strength can make a truly significant difference. At Georgia Power, we are committed to stewardship — ensuring the future is bright for our next generation.

Georgia Power employees play important roles in the communities we serve, volunteering for charities and service organizations, and supporting local community civic organizations.

Charitable Giving

Giving back to the communities we serve is just one way Georgia Power honors its commitment to be a Citizen Wherever We Serve. Through the Georgia Power Foundation, the company has contributed approximately $107 million to qualifying nonprofit agencies since its inception in 1986. Over the past five years, the company has contributed approximately $14 million to various community projects. The company's giving is focused on improving education by supporting organizations that impact statewide policy and workforce recruitment; protecting the environment; health and human services through United Way and Project Share; and region and plant initiatives.

Environmental Stewardship

Georgia Power supports an array of environmental projects to make our air and water cleaner and our land more beautiful. The company actively promotes environmentally sound generation and funds research and development for advanced energy technologies.

Under the company's current environmental compliance strategy, Georgia Power is in the midst of a $7 billion program to equip our coal-fired power plants with the latest environmental controls to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and mercury. In 2008, the mammoth construction program yielded the first scrubbers, sophisticated equipment that reduces SO2 emissions by as much as 95 percent. By late 2014 when the last scrubbers are scheduled to begin operations at plants Branch and Yates, more than 93 percent of Georgia Power's coal-fired generation - or 11,000-plus megawatts — will be scrubbed.

The scrubbers help Georgia Power comply with federal Clean Air Act restrictions on emissions of SO2, a contributor to acid rain, fine particulate matter and limited visibility in national parks and wilderness areas.

We've also built and enhanced habitats for wildlife, planted more than 1.4 million trees across the state over the past five years and are involved in numerous company-supported programs that educate the public about the environment and energy conservation.

We do all this while continuing to keep our rates well below the national average.

Lakes and Recreation

Georgia Power is the largest non-government provider of recreation facilities in the state. The company is responsible for 18 reservoirs throughout Georgia, including some 58,850 acres of lakes, 1,391 miles of shoreline and dozens of parks developed for family enjoyment. In addition to these facilities, the company leases about 21,750 acres of prime hunting land to the state of Georgia for use as wildlife management areas operated by the Wildlife Resources Division of the Department of Natural Resources.
